The Venus Atlas application offers an engaging exploration of Venus's hidden surface through an interactive 3D globe. Utilizing intuitive pinch and finger gestures, users can manipulate the globe, which is displayed in false color to represent the planet's topography—an aspect obscured from Earth by its dense cloud cover.
As users zoom in, additional labels become visible, revealing finer details of the surface. The application allows for double tapping on these labels to access more in-depth information about specific geological features, enhancing the educational experience.
Alongside its topographical features, Venus Atlas provides real-time updates on the planet's phases and calculates various attributes based on user-selected date, time, and location. A searchable feature database enables users to swiftly navigate to specific locations on the globe.
The globe offers flexibility in orientation, allowing users to display it with either the northern or southern hemisphere at the top, or even in an inverted format. Notably, the application includes over 2,000 named features and details on 17 spacecraft that have successfully reached Venus's surface.
The phase view is interactive as well; users can swipe left or right to shift between days seamlessly. Additionally, users interested in other celestial bodies can find atlases for the Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn available for download. The App Store also features Planisphere, a dedicated star charting application.
